More information

Emphasise 'one more' as a phrase, not just a calculation. Repeat it consistently.

Limit to numbers 1–5 for children who need consolidation of small numbers.

Can children predict 'one more' without counting? Do they know this always increases by exactly 1?

Stones or seeds and open hands are all that is needed. This activity can be done entirely with fingers.

Some children recount all objects from 1 after adding one, rather than recognising that adding one always gives the next number in the sequence. Help them see this as a rule, not just a calculation.
