Slow Looking: Contour Line Drawing

Overview

Students practice slowing down and focusing on edges, improving their ability to draw what they see rather than what they expect.

Learning Objective
Students improve observational accuracy by drawing the outlines of objects slowly and carefully using contour lines.

Resources needed

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Objects to draw

Lesson stages

0 / 10 done
  1. 1 Introduce contour drawing: drawing the edges of an object.
  2. 2 Demonstrate slow, careful line drawing without rushing.
  3. 3 Students observe an object closely.
  4. 4 Optional: try blind contour (without looking at paper).
  5. 5 Students draw the object using continuous lines.
  6. 6 Encourage slow movement and attention to detail.
  7. 7 Midway pause: compare drawing with object.
  8. 8 Students refine and adjust lines.
  9. 9 In pairs, students discuss differences between observation and expectation.
  10. 10 Discuss: what changed when you slowed down?

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Use continuous line only.
  • Draw more complex objects.
  • Combine contour with shading.
More information

Teach: contour, outline, edge, observe, continuous. Use frames: 'I followed the edge of…'.

Provide simpler objects or thicker drawing tools. Allow guided tracing.

Are students observing carefully? Do lines follow actual shapes?

Draw in sand or trace objects with fingers.

Students may rush or rely on memory rather than observation.

Contour drawing strengthens observation skills and hand-eye coordination.
