Seeing the Gaps: Drawing with Negative Space

Overview

Students often focus only on the objects themselves. This activity shifts attention to the spaces around objects, helping students see shapes more accurately.

Learning Objective
Students understand the concept of negative space and use it to improve accuracy and composition in their drawings.

Resources needed

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Objects with clear gaps (e.g. chair, plant, scissors)

Lesson stages

0 / 10 done
  1. 1 Introduce the idea of negative space: the space around and between objects.
  2. 2 Show a simple example and outline the space around an object rather than the object itself.
  3. 3 Students observe an object and identify its negative spaces.
  4. 4 Ask students to trace the 'gaps' in the air with their finger before drawing.
  5. 5 Students begin drawing by focusing only on the spaces around the object.
  6. 6 Encourage slow, careful observation of shapes formed by empty space.
  7. 7 Midway check: compare drawing to object and adjust shapes.
  8. 8 Students refine lines and complete the drawing.
  9. 9 In pairs, students compare drawings and identify negative space areas.
  10. 10 Discuss: how did focusing on space change your drawing?

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Use complex objects with more gaps (e.g. bicycle, plant branches).
  • Fill in negative spaces with shading or colour.
  • Turn the drawing into an abstract composition.
More information

Teach: negative space, positive space, gap, shape, outline, observe. Use frames: 'The space between… looks like…', 'I drew the space around…'.

Provide printed images with highlighted negative spaces. Allow tracing or guided outlines.

Can students identify and draw negative space accurately? Does their drawing reflect improved proportions?

Use shadows or natural objects. Draw in sand or describe shapes verbally.

Students may revert to drawing the object instead of the surrounding space.

Understanding negative space improves proportion, accuracy, and composition in all forms of visual art.
