Estimate and Check

Overview

Children guess how many objects are hidden or shown, then count to check.

Learning Objective
Children estimate quantities and check by counting.

Resources needed

  • Container or cloth
  • Small objects (stones, beans, beads)
  • Paper (optional)

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Show a container with objects inside, or briefly reveal a group.
  2. 2 Ask: 'How many do you think there are?'
  3. 3 Collect different guesses without judgement.
  4. 4 Count the objects together.
  5. 5 Compare guesses with the real number.
  6. 6 Ask: 'Who was close? Why?'
  7. 7 Repeat with different amounts.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Use larger or smaller objects
  • Group objects before counting
  • Order guesses from smallest to largest before revealing
More information

Normalise all guesses. Emphasise that estimating is thinking, not guessing randomly.

Start with very small groups (up to 5) where estimates are more likely to be close.

Do children's estimates become more accurate over time? Can they explain why they chose their number?

Any container — a cup, folded leaf, or cupped hands — works for hiding objects. Use seeds or stones as the objects to estimate.

Children often think estimating means guessing randomly, or that a wrong estimate is a failure. Reinforce that an estimate is a careful think, not a guess, and that being close is the goal.
