More information

Demonstrate grouping by putting objects into small containers or drawing circles on the ground.

Provide containers with dots on them (e.g. 2 dots) to show what size group to make.

Do children understand that grouping does not change the total? Can they use groups of 5 or 10 fluently?

Use any available objects and draw circles in soil or on paper to define groups. No counting frames, trays, or printed materials needed.

Children sometimes think regrouping changes the total — for example, believing that 3 groups of 4 is a different amount than 12 loose objects. This is a critical conservation concept that needs repeated practical experience to secure.
