Make and Continue Patterns

Overview

Children build patterns and predict what comes next.

Learning Objective
Children create and extend repeating patterns.

Resources needed

  • Objects (stones, sticks, blocks)

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Create a simple pattern (e.g. A B A B).
  2. 2 Ask children to copy it.
  3. 3 Ask: 'What comes next?'
  4. 4 Extend the pattern.
  5. 5 Create new patterns together.
  6. 6 Ask children to describe the pattern.
  7. 7 Encourage independent pattern making.

Variations

  • Use more complex patterns (AAB, ABC)
  • Use colours or shapes
  • Use sounds or movements
More information

Label the pattern using letters (A, B) as an abstract bridge before moving to verbal descriptions.

Start with two-element patterns (AB) and only introduce three elements (AAB) when children are confident.

Can children identify the repeating unit? Can they continue a pattern without the full sequence visible?

Natural objects from outside are ideal. Leaves, stones, and sticks provide at least three distinct types for pattern making at no cost.

Children frequently continue a pattern correctly for two or three elements but then drift into a different rule. Ask them to read their pattern aloud from the beginning — errors become immediately audible.
