Group Dance

Overview

Groups create a short dance sequence using a simple structure: beginning, middle, end.

Learning Objective
Students create and perform a short group dance sequence using rhythm, formation, and movement quality.

Resources needed

  • Open space
  • Optional: music or drumbeat

Lesson stages

0 / 8 done
  1. 1 Warm up with free movement to a rhythm — clapping or a drum.
  2. 2 Teach three movement qualities: sharp, smooth, heavy.
  3. 3 Groups of 4–5 choose a theme (e.g. a storm, a market, a game).
  4. 4 Create an 8-count opening position.
  5. 5 Create a middle section with 3 movements that tell the theme.
  6. 6 End with a clear final still position.
  7. 7 Rehearse three times, then perform to another group.
  8. 8 Audience identifies the theme.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Use traditional local music or song.
  • Add a travelling section — move across the space.
  • Canon effect: groups start 4 counts apart.
More information

Teach: rhythm, sharp, smooth, together, sequence, perform. Movement quality words work well with physical demonstration.

Simplify to two movements in the middle section. Focus on starting and finishing clearly as the main assessment criteria.

Does the dance have a clear beginning, middle, and end? Are group members moving together or independently?

No music needed — a hand clap or drum sets the rhythm. Any open space works for performance.

Students think dance must be complicated. A simple sequence performed with confidence and precision is more impressive than a chaotic complex one.

Dance develops rhythm, spatial awareness, creativity, and performance confidence. It is highly inclusive and culturally relevant.
