Hoop Skills

Overview

Children explore rolling, spinning, and jumping through hoops in a variety of ways.

Learning Objective
Children develop coordination and rhythm through a range of activities using a hoop.

Resources needed

  • Hoops — one per child or one between two (or use rope circles)

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Roll the hoop forward and run after it.
  2. 2 Roll it and run to get in front — catch it before it falls.
  3. 3 Spin the hoop on the ground and jump in before it stops.
  4. 4 Place the hoop on the ground and jump in and out with two feet.
  5. 5 Jump in and out on one foot.
  6. 6 Hoop as a target: throw a ball to land inside it from 3 metres.
  7. 7 Pairs: roll to a partner who rolls back — keep the rally going.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Make a hoop course on the ground and hop through.
  • Two hoops — jump from one to the next down a line.
  • Hula hoop around the waist for those who can manage it.
More information

Teach: roll, spin, jump, land, inside, outside. Demonstrate each task before children try — the actions are easy to see.

Make rope circles on the ground as a free alternative to plastic hoops. All tasks work the same way.

Can children land with control inside the hoop? Can they roll the hoop with enough spin to keep it upright?

Make hoops from flexible sticks bent into a circle and tied. Or use rope laid in a circle on the ground — equally effective for jumping tasks.

Children push the hoop instead of rolling it with a spin. Teach the wrist flick that keeps it upright — this needs practice.

Hoop activities develop a wide range of coordination skills. They are engaging, self-directed, and easily differentiated.
