Jump Rope

Overview

Students skip individually or over a shared rope, developing rhythm and coordination.

Learning Objective
Students develop coordination and fitness through individual and group skipping.

Resources needed

  • Rope or tied strips of cloth

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Start with individual skipping — turn rope over head and jump.
  2. 2 Practise jumping on the spot without the rope to find rhythm.
  3. 3 Add the rope once the jump rhythm is established.
  4. 4 Count jumps — try to beat personal best.
  5. 5 Two students turn a long rope while others jump in.
  6. 6 Try jumping with a partner in the same rope.
  7. 7 Finish with a 1-minute skipping challenge.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Skip to a chant or count.
  • Cross arms while skipping.
  • Double under — rope passes twice per jump.
More information

Teach: skip, jump, turn, rhythm, in, out. Use a chant to help establish rhythm for beginners.

Swing the rope side to side on the ground for beginners to jump over without it going overhead.

Can students maintain a consistent rhythm? Do they jump from two feet and land softly?

Tie strips of old cloth together to make a free rope. Works on any surface.

Students jump too high. Teach them to jump just enough to clear the rope — small efficient jumps are faster and less tiring.

Jump rope is one of the most effective and low-cost fitness tools available. It builds coordination, endurance, and rhythm simultaneously.
