Throwing for Distance

Overview

Students throw a stick or implement for maximum distance, focusing on grip, run-up, and release angle.

Learning Objective
Students improve throwing distance by applying correct technique to a standing throw.

Resources needed

  • Straight sticks of similar length and weight
  • Open outdoor space with clear throwing lane

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Safety first: establish clear throwing lanes and a waiting area behind the thrower.
  2. 2 Teach grip: hold the stick near the end, not the middle.
  3. 3 Teach the throwing action: stand sideways, pull arm back, step forward, throw.
  4. 4 Each student takes 3 practice throws.
  5. 5 Mark best throw with a stone.
  6. 6 Focus on release angle: throw at roughly 45 degrees for maximum distance.
  7. 7 Students try to beat their own mark.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Throw for accuracy at a target area.
  • Compare throws with different stick weights.
  • Seated throw to isolate the upper body technique.
More information

Teach: grip, release, angle, distance, pull back, step. The action sequence is: turn sideways, arm back, step, pull, release.

Students who cannot perform a full throwing action can do a standing push throw or seated throw.

Are students turning sideways before throwing? Is the release point high — arm extended fully before release?

Straight sticks of similar size make free throwing implements. Mark distances in soil. No javelins or measuring tape needed.

Students throw with the arm only. Teach the whole body rotation — the power comes from the legs, hips, and torso, not just the arm.

The throwing technique used here applies directly to javelin, cricket bowling, and baseball pitching. It is a fundamental athletic skill.
