More information

Verbalise the movement as you model (e.g. 'down, around, stop'). This narration supports memory.

Use a finger tracing approach on a large drawn number first before independent writing.

Is the child's formation recognisable? Do they start in the correct place and move in the right direction?

Soil, dust, or fine gravel in a tray all work instead of sand. A finger or stick is the only writing tool needed.

Several numbers are commonly reversed — 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9 are the most frequent. Reversals are normal at this age but should be gently corrected by modelling correct formation each time.
