Students often focus only on the objects themselves. This activity shifts attention to the spaces around objects, helping students see shapes more accurately.

Variations

More information

Teach: negative space, positive space, gap, shape, outline, observe. Use frames: 'The space between… looks like…', 'I drew the space around…'.

Provide printed images with highlighted negative spaces. Allow tracing or guided outlines.

Can students identify and draw negative space accurately? Does their drawing reflect improved proportions?

Use shadows or natural objects. Draw in sand or describe shapes verbally.

Students may revert to drawing the object instead of the surrounding space.
