Flip the Focus: Positive and Negative Shape Design

Overview

Students explore how both filled shapes (positive space) and empty areas (negative space) can be equally important in creating an image.

Learning Objective
Students understand the relationship between positive and negative shapes and use both intentionally in a balanced composition.

Resources needed

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Optional: black markers or coloured pencils

Lesson stages

0 / 10 done
  1. 1 Introduce positive space (object) and negative space (background).
  2. 2 Show examples where both are equally important.
  3. 3 Students draw a simple shape in the centre of the page.
  4. 4 Fill the shape (positive space) with colour or shading.
  5. 5 Then design the surrounding space to create interesting negative shapes.
  6. 6 Encourage balance between both areas.
  7. 7 Midway check: are both spaces visually interesting?
  8. 8 Students refine their designs.
  9. 9 In pairs, students identify positive and negative areas.
  10. 10 Discuss: which part stands out more and why?

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Reverse the design (dark background, light shapes).
  • Create patterns using both spaces.
  • Use only black and white for strong contrast.
More information

Teach: positive space, negative space, shape, balance, contrast. Use frames: 'This is the space around…'.

Provide templates with simple shapes. Allow tracing.

Can students distinguish between positive and negative space? Can they use both effectively?

Draw in sand or use objects to demonstrate space relationships.

Students may ignore the background and focus only on the object.

Understanding space relationships is essential for composition and design.
