Overview

Students explore how everyday objects and drawings can be broken down into basic shapes and then reconstructed creatively.

  3. 3 Students look around and identify objects made from simple shapes.
  4. 4 Students draw 3–5 basic shapes randomly on their paper.
  5. 5 Challenge: turn those shapes into a complete picture.
  6. 6 Share drawings — others guess what the picture represents.

Variations

  • Limit to only one type of shape (e.g., only circles).
  • Create abstract art instead of realistic images.
  • Work collaboratively — one student draws shapes, another completes the image.
More information

Teach: shape, combine, transform, outline, object. Use prompts like: 'This shape became…', 'I added… to change it into…'.

Provide pre-drawn shapes for students to use. Allow tracing or cutting shapes instead of drawing.

Can students identify shapes in objects? Can they creatively transform shapes into recognizable images?

Draw shapes in dirt or sand using sticks. Entire activity can be done verbally by describing transformations.

Students may think drawings must start with detailed outlines rather than simple shapes.

Breaking images into shapes is a key foundational skill in drawing and visual design.
