Children practise counting down from a number.
Tap a step to mark it as done.
A countdown to a loud clap or jump at zero creates excitement and motivation.
Use a visible countdown line so children can track their position.
Can children count back without hesitation? Do they connect counting back to getting smaller?
No resources needed. Use fingers, actions, or voice alone. Soil or a stick-drawn number line provides additional support at no cost.
Children often know the forward count strongly but hesitate or skip numbers when counting back. The sequence 'after 7 is 8' does not automatically reverse to 'before 8 is 7'. Practise backwards counting as a separate, frequent routine.
