Dribble and Dodge

Overview

Students dribble a ball through a line of markers using feet, changing direction to avoid each one.

Learning Objective
Students develop close ball control by dribbling through a course of markers.

Resources needed

  • Ball or round stone
  • Markers (stones, sticks, or bottles)

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Set up a line of markers about 1 metre apart.
  2. 2 Students dribble through the markers using their feet.
  3. 3 Use both the inside and outside of the foot.
  4. 4 Dribble back through in the opposite direction.
  5. 5 Time each student and encourage improvement.
  6. 6 Add a second line for a parallel race.
  7. 7 Progress to dribbling with a partner defending.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Use hands instead of feet.
  • Dribble backwards through the course.
  • Knock over the markers — defender replaces them.
More information

Teach: dribble, control, inside, outside, change direction. Demonstrate the push touch with the inside of the foot.

Wider gaps between markers for less confident students. Use a larger, slower ball.

Do students keep the ball close rather than kicking too far ahead? Can they use both feet?

Any round object works as a ball. Stones or sticks as markers cost nothing. Works on any flat outdoor surface.

Students kick the ball too far ahead and then chase it. Teach the short, controlled touch — keep the ball within one step.

Close ball control is fundamental to football and hockey. Repeated short practice builds muscle memory quickly.
