Floor Sequence

Overview

Students link three or more gymnastics elements into a flowing sequence with clear start and finish positions.

Learning Objective
Students create and perform a gymnastics sequence combining balance, movement, and stillness.

Resources needed

  • Flat floor space or grass

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Warm up the wrists, ankles, and spine.
  2. 2 Revise basic elements: forward roll, balance on one leg, bridge, straddle sit.
  3. 3 Teach the idea of a sequence: move smoothly from one element to the next.
  4. 4 Students choose three elements and practise the transitions between them.
  5. 5 Add a clear starting position and a clear finish.
  6. 6 Practise the full sequence three times.
  7. 7 Perform to a partner who gives one positive and one improvement comment.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Sequence must include one balance, one travelling move, and one shape.
  • Perform in pairs with mirrored or matching movements.
  • Set sequence to a slow count of 8.
More information

Teach: sequence, transition, balance, shape, flow, still. Key phrase: 'move smoothly — no stops between elements'.

Students choose elements they can perform safely. A sequence of three standing balances is valid.

Are transitions smooth or do students stop and think between elements? Is the start position deliberate and held for 2 seconds?

No equipment needed. Grass or compacted soil works. No mats required for standing or kneeling elements.

Students think gymnastics requires special skills. Emphasise that a sequence of simple elements performed with control and flow is more valuable than one difficult trick done poorly.

Gymnastics sequences develop body awareness, control, and the ability to plan and memorise a movement pattern.
