Over the Line

Overview

Students hit or throw a ball over a rope or line, keeping it in play as long as possible.

Learning Objective
Students develop sending and receiving skills in a net game context.

Resources needed

  • Rope or stick as net
  • Ball or tied cloth ball
  • Marked court

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Set up a low rope or stick between two posts at waist height.
  2. 2 Two teams stand on either side.
  3. 3 The aim is to send the ball over the net and into the other team's area.
  4. 4 The other team must stop it landing and send it back.
  5. 5 Start with throwing and catching — no hitting.
  6. 6 Progress to hitting with hands (volleyball style).
  7. 7 Count how many times the ball crosses the net in 2 minutes.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Must catch before returning — no immediate hits.
  • Only allowed three touches on one side before returning.
  • Lower the net — underarm only.
More information

Teach: net, send, return, volley, court, side. Focus on the cooperative version first — keeping the rally going rather than competitive scoring.

Allow catching and throwing for students who find hitting too difficult. A balloon moves slowly and is easier to hit.

Are students moving to get behind the ball before hitting or catching? Are they communicating with teammates about who takes each ball?

A rope between two sticks makes a free net. A tied cloth ball or balloon works. Mark the court with stones.

Students hit too hard and lose control. Teach that control is more important than power — aim for accuracy over the net first.

Net games develop sending, receiving, and court awareness. The principles apply to volleyball, badminton, and tennis.
