Shape Jumps

Overview

Shapes are drawn on the ground. Children jump in and out of different shapes.

Learning Objective
Children practise jumping while connecting physical movement with shape recognition.

Resources needed

  • Chalk or sticks to draw shapes on ground

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Draw large shapes on the ground: circle, square, triangle.
  2. 2 Children jump into a shape when the teacher calls its name.
  3. 3 Jump out on 'go'.
  4. 4 Add a colour: jump into the red circle.
  5. 5 Try jumping with two feet together, then one foot.
  6. 6 Race to jump into the correct shape fastest.
  7. 7 Let children take turns calling the shapes.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Call numbers instead of shapes (connect to maths).
  • Balance inside the shape on one foot.
  • Jump between two shapes without touching the ground outside.
More information

Teach shape names and colours. Pointing to the shape as you call it helps children connect word to shape.

Step in and out instead of jumping for children who need it.

Can children jump accurately into the correct shape? Do they land with control inside the shape boundary?

Draw shapes in soil with a stick. No chalk or printed materials needed.

Children may run to the shape instead of jumping. Emphasise that the last move into the shape must be a jump.

Cross-curricular link with maths (shapes, colours, numbers). A good warm-up or main activity.
