Standing Long Jump

Overview

Students jump as far as possible from a standing position and measure or mark their distance.

Learning Objective
Students improve jumping distance through practising correct technique.

Resources needed

  • Clear flat ground
  • Sticks or stones to mark distances

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Mark a take-off line.
  2. 2 Teach the technique: feet together, bend knees, swing arms back, jump forward, land on two feet.
  3. 3 Each student takes three practice jumps.
  4. 4 Mark the best jump with a stone.
  5. 5 Compare distances in the group.
  6. 6 Practise the arm swing — it adds significant distance.
  7. 7 Each student tries to beat their own mark.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Hop, step, and jump (triple jump style).
  • Jump from one foot and compare distance.
  • Blindfolded estimate — guess distance before measuring.
More information

Teach: jump, bend, swing, land, distance, further, shorter. Count the jump preparation together: ready, bend, swing, jump.

Students who cannot stand jump can use upper body throw for distance instead.

Are students using arm swing to generate power? Do they land balanced on two feet without falling backward?

Mark distances with sticks or stones pushed into the ground. No tape measure needed — compare relative distances.

Students often jump upward rather than forward. Teach them to aim for distance by projecting forward at roughly 45 degrees.

The standing long jump is a classic fitness test as well as an athletic event. Arm swing can add 20–30% to distance.
