Story Movement

Overview

The teacher narrates a short story and students express it through movement.

Learning Objective
Students express ideas and emotions through movement, developing creativity and body awareness.

Resources needed

  • Open space

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Choose a simple story or scenario (a journey through a forest, a storm, a market day).
  2. 2 Narrate slowly while students move to match the story.
  3. 3 Prompt movements: 'You are climbing a steep hill... the ground is muddy... the wind is strong...'
  4. 4 Students create their own movement interpretations.
  5. 5 Pairs create a short story and perform it through movement.
  6. 6 Others watch and guess what is happening.
  7. 7 Discuss: how did you show different feelings with your body?

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Use local stories or folktales as the narrative.
  • Groups perform simultaneously rather than one at a time.
  • Add a simple prop (cloth, stick) to enhance movement.
More information

Narrate slowly and clearly. Use simple language. Demonstrate ambiguous actions — 'heavy', 'light', 'scared'. Accept all interpretations.

Students can participate at any physical level. Focus on expression, not athleticism.

Are students using their whole body to express ideas? Can they change the quality of movement (fast/slow, heavy/light) intentionally?

No equipment needed. Any space works. The story is the only resource.

Students think creative movement means running around. Guide them to slow down and focus on the quality and meaning of each movement.

Creative movement links PE with drama, literacy, and emotional development. It is especially valuable for students who are less confident in competitive sport.
