Target Throw

Overview

Children throw objects at targets drawn on the ground or standing upright.

Learning Objective
Children improve throwing accuracy by aiming at targets.

Resources needed

  • Small throwable objects (stones, rolled paper, tied cloth)
  • Targets drawn on ground or upright

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Draw circles on the ground or set up upright targets.
  2. 2 Stand about 3 metres away.
  3. 3 Throw underarm to land inside or hit the target.
  4. 4 Count how many hits out of 5 throws.
  5. 5 Move further away for more challenge.
  6. 6 Try overarm throwing and compare accuracy.
  7. 7 Compete in pairs: most hits wins.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Score points for different targets (small = more points).
  • Throw with non-dominant hand.
  • Throw from different positions: seated, kneeling, standing.
More information

Teach: throw, aim, hit, miss, score. Demonstrate the underarm throw action clearly — elbow back, step forward, release.

Bring the target closer or make it larger. Focus on the throwing technique regardless of accuracy.

Do children step forward with the opposite foot when throwing? Are they following through toward the target?

Stones, tied cloth balls, or rolled paper are all free throwing objects. Targets drawn in soil cost nothing.

Children often throw with the same foot forward as their throwing arm. Teach the opposite foot forward explicitly.

Underarm throwing technique is foundational for cricket, rounders, and many other sports.
