Team Tag

Overview

One team chases the other. Tagged players freeze until freed by a teammate.

Learning Objective
Students develop running, dodging, and team strategy through a cooperative tag game.

Resources needed

  • Open outdoor space
  • Optional: coloured bands to identify teams

Lesson stages

0 / 7 done
  1. 1 Divide into two equal teams: chasers and runners.
  2. 2 Chasers try to tag runners.
  3. 3 Tagged runners freeze on the spot.
  4. 4 Frozen runners can be freed by a teammate touching their hand.
  5. 5 Chasers win if all runners are frozen at the same time.
  6. 6 Set a time limit — 3 minutes. Count how many are frozen at the end.
  7. 7 Swap roles and compare results.

Tap a step to mark it as done.

Variations

  • Two taggers instead of a whole team.
  • Frozen players must do 5 jumps before being freed.
  • Add a safe zone where runners cannot be tagged.
More information

Teach: tag, freeze, free, chase, safe. Walk through the rules slowly before starting — demonstrate a tag and a freeze.

Less mobile students can be the taggers who walk only, or can be the ones who free frozen players.

Are runners working together to free frozen teammates? Are chasers working as a team to corner runners?

No equipment needed. Torn cloth strips on arms can identify teams if needed. Works on any open ground.

Students often focus only on their individual role. Discuss team strategy before each round — chasers should spread out, not cluster.

Team tag develops tactical thinking alongside physical fitness. The freezing mechanic prevents anyone being excluded for long.
