More information

The error-finding task is motivating for children. Praise reasoning, not just the correct answer.

Place the error at the end of a pattern rather than in the middle to make it easier to spot.

Can children locate and explain the error? Can they fix it and check the whole pattern?

Lay out patterns using natural objects. The error can be introduced simply by swapping or misplacing one item. No prepared cards or printed materials needed.

Children sometimes identify an item as an error because it looks different from their preferred version, rather than because it breaks the rule. Always ask them to explain the rule first, then justify why the identified item breaks it.
