Claude Shannon was an American mathematician and engineer. He invented the field of information theory. His work made the digital age possible. Almost every technology that uses digital signals (mobile phones, the internet, computers, GPS, streaming, modern medical imaging) depends on ideas Shannon developed in the 1930s and 1940s. He was born in 1916 in Petoskey, Michigan, and grew up in the small town of Gaylord. His father was a small-town judge. His mother was a language teacher and school principal. Shannon was a clever, curious child. He built his own telegraph as a teenager, using barbed wire fences to connect with a friend's house. He studied electrical engineering and mathematics at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1936. He went to MIT for graduate work. His 1937 master's thesis, written when he was 21, applied Boolean logic (a form of mathematical logic developed in the 19th century) to electrical circuits. The work showed that any logical operation could be performed by appropriate combinations of switches. The thesis has been called the most important master's thesis of the 20th century. It became the foundation for designing all digital computer hardware. During the Second World War, Shannon worked on cryptography (the science of codes) at Bell Laboratories. He met the British codebreaker Alan Turing during the war. The two men had lunch together regularly when Turing visited the United States. After the war, Shannon stayed at Bell Labs. In 1948, he published A Mathematical Theory of Communication, the founding paper of information theory. He was 32. He continued working at Bell Labs and later at MIT until he developed Alzheimer's disease in the 1990s. He died in 2001.
Claude Shannon matters for three reasons. First, he founded information theory. Before Shannon, communication engineers had no general theory of what they were doing. They built telephones, radios, and telegraphs by trial and error. Shannon's 1948 paper provided the mathematical foundations of all digital communication. He defined the basic unit of information (the bit), showed how to measure information mathematically, and proved deep theorems about the limits of communication. Every modern digital technology rests on these foundations.
Second, his master's thesis from 1937 made digital computers possible. He showed that the abstract logic of true and false could be physically implemented using electrical switches. Any logical operation could be built from combinations of these switches. The insight became the foundation of digital circuit design. Every computer chip, every smartphone, every digital device works on principles Shannon laid out at age 21. Without his work, the modern computing revolution would have happened differently or not at all.
Third, he set a model for what scientific work could be. He worked on hard problems quietly. He published only when he had something important to say. He had wide interests outside his main work. He built juggling robots, mechanical mice that could solve mazes, chess-playing programs, and tools for unicycle riding. He combined deep mathematical work with playful experimentation. Many later scientists and engineers have admired both sides of his career. The work is foundational. The play that surrounded it produced its own important contributions.

The collected works edited by N.J.A. Sloane and Aaron Wyner (Claude Elwood Shannon: Collected Papers, 1993) gathers his major writings. For information theory itself, Thomas Cover and Joy Thomas's textbook Elements of Information Theory (1991, revised 2006) is the standard introduction.
Shannon invented the computer.
He did not. The first electronic computers were built in the 1940s by teams that included Alan Turing, John von Neumann, J. Presper Eckert, and others. Shannon contributed to the foundations but did not build the machines. His master's thesis showed that Boolean logic could be implemented in electrical circuits. This was the foundation for digital circuit design that all later computers used. He also founded information theory, which underlies digital communication. But he did not personally build computers. He did important theoretical work that made the building possible. The distinction matters. Shannon's contribution was foundational rather than constructive.
His information theory only applies to communication.
It applies far beyond communication. Information theory is now used in genetics (DNA codes information), neuroscience (brains process information), physics (the relation of information to physical entropy), statistics (information measures of evidence), machine learning (information-theoretic loss functions), data compression, cryptography, linguistics, and many other fields. Shannon developed the theory for telephone and radio communication. The mathematical framework turned out to be much more general. The same equations describe how DNA stores information, how neurons fire, how data compresses, and how machine learning algorithms learn. Calling information theory just about communication misses how foundational the framework is across modern science.
His inventions and toys were separate from his serious work.
They were connected. Shannon learned by building. His mechanical mouse Theseus was an early example of machine learning. His juggling research produced real mathematical results. His chess-playing programs contributed to early artificial intelligence. The 'play' was often a way of testing ideas physically. The 'serious work' often grew from playful experimentation. The two activities supported each other. Many great scientists work this way. Treating Shannon's inventions as cute hobbies separate from his real work misses how his actual creative process worked. The play was part of the serious work. The serious work grew out of play.
Bell Labs of his time would still be the same place to do this work today.
Bell Labs in Shannon's era was unusual. The American telephone monopoly funded an enormous research operation with significant freedom. Shannon could spend years on basic research without obvious commercial application. Few modern institutions support this kind of work. Universities pressure researchers to publish frequently. Companies focus on near-term products. Government funding has shifted away from blue-sky basic research. Shannon's career was made possible partly by an unusual institutional environment that no longer exists in the same form. Praising his individual achievements without noting the institutional support that made them possible misses an important part of the story. Bell Labs supported the slow, deep work that Shannon did. Modern equivalents are harder to find.
For research-level engagement, modern information theory is a large active field. Imre Csiszar and Janos Korner's Information Theory: Coding Theorems for Discrete Memoryless Systems (1981, revised 2011) is a major scholarly text. The IEEE Transactions on Information Theory publishes current research. Shannon's connections to physics, especially through entropy, are explored in works including Charles Bennett's papers on the thermodynamics of computation. Recent work on quantum information theory extends Shannon's framework to quantum systems.
